A new program! The Friends of the Brown County Library has created a new program to increase literacy in Brown County. The program, called Pages & Stages - Grow With Books, is a partnership with the N.E.W. Community Clinic, which administers the federal WIC program for Brown County (“WIC” is the acronym for the US Department of Agriculture’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children). Currently, the NEWCC/WIC program is the second largest in the state of Wisconsin, second only to Milwaukee County. There are 5,144 participants in our local WIC that include pregnant women, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to the age of 5. The participating volume of children in the program includes 799 one-year olds, 722 two-year olds, 656 three-year olds, and 659 four-year olds. Under the program, each child who participates in Pages & Stages and is brought into the clinic for an appointment will be given an age specific children’s book. In addition to encouraging reading, each book will have an FBCL label with a QR code to connect families to free library programs. It will be a great way to promote literacy by getting books into the hands of children and library information to their families. How you can help: In addition to donations to help fund the program, we will occasionally need volunteers to help sort, add labels, and deliver the books to the N.E.W. Community Clinic. If you want to help with this promising new program or would like more information, please contact the Friends at info@browncountylibraryfriends.org |
